    Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge

    As the largest contiguous open space in the Metro Denver area, this wildlife refuge is one of the largest such urban refuges in the country. The refuge protects eagles, deer, coyotes, owls and other species from urban sprawl and development. Guided trolley tours of the park are available.

    O'Fallon Park

    O'Fallon Park was acquired by Denver Mountain Parks in 1938 and continues to protect various species of plants and animals. Visitors can access hiking trails, fishing areas and barbeque grills.

    Lookout Mountain Nature Center

    Encompassing the historic Boettcher House in this 110-acre park, the Lookout Mountain Nature Center offers a variety of services to visitors. Programs are available for all ages of people, as well as numerous nature trails, some linking to nearby Apex and Windy Saddle parks and the Buffalo Bill Museum and Grave. The center is open Tuesday through Sunday from 10am to 4pm.

    Denver Botanic Gardens

    The Denver Botanic Gardens boasts over 32,000 plants, including exotic plant species from the Himalayas, Africa and Australia. The main facility sits on 23 acres of land on York Street, while other sites include a 750 acre wildlife and plant refuge in Littleton and a five acre formal garden in downtown Denver called Centennial Gardens.

    Matthews/Winters Open Spaces Park

    Located on the south side of Golden, the Matthews/Winters Park is often used for wildlife viewing and mountain biking. Markers are found throughout the park, detailing historic areas, such as Mount Vernon mining town site and the jutting rocks of Hogback.

    Dedisse Park

    Part of the historic Denver Mountain Parks, Dedisse Park was established in 1919 and is located 2 mi (3 km) west of Evergreen in Bear Creek Canyon.     Sand Creek Regional Greenway

    Sand Creek Regional Greenway is a 14 mi (22 km) pathway that connects Aurora with Commerce City. More than 50 mi (80 km) of additional trail systems wind their way through the area, welcoming people to run, bike, horseback ride and walk through the northern section of Metro Denver.

    White Ranch Open Space Park

    Lory State Park

    Due west of Fort Collins, Lory State Park offers a wealth of outdoor activities to visitors. Situated beside the Horsetooth Reservoir, spend time fishing, boating, water skiing and doing various other activities. A number of trails wind through the park, which are frequented by hikers, horseback riders and mountain bikers in the summer cross-country skiing in the winter.

    Cherry Creek State Park

    Found between Denver and Aurora, Cherry Creek State Park is frequented throughout the year because of its model airplane flying field, shooting range and swimming beach. Inside is an 880-acre lake where anglers try their hand at catching trout, lass, pike and other fish. Other recreational activities welcomed include picnicking, hiking, camping and sailing. A concession stand and a rental stand are found near the lake and are open from May through September.
